A Cheap and Fun Friday Night Date Night

It’s been one of those weeks… You know the kind where everything goes wrong, you never seem to stop running around, cleaning, and doing things, and where you just want to pull all your hair out if you have you have to calm down your toddler one more time.

I decided that it had been way too long since my husband and I had gotten out of the house – mainly because we just haven’t had the extra money to go do anything. I called up my sitter asked if she would come watch my son for a little bit that night and decided to surprise my husband with a cheap date. I figured it didn’t matter what we did, as long as we got out of the house and did something together.

I wanted to do something different. We didn’t have a lot of extra money and I had been wanting to try one of the Dating Divas‘ fun dates for awhile now so I choose one that I have had in the back of my mind to do for awhile now: The Bookstore Date.

Me – all ready for our date!

My husband got home a few minutes early from work and I told him that I had a sitter coming after we had dinner. We both got dressed, ate dinner and headed out. I took him to Starbucks and we each got a drink and split an amazing blueberry crumb bread! We then headed to the bookstore (Books-a-Million) which just happened to be across the street.

I handed him the two task cards that I had downloaded, printed and stapled together from the dating divas website and told him to follow the instructions on the first three and then we would meet up. We had fun finding a recipe we wanted to make for each other, a magazine quiz, and a favorite childhood book.

We then decided to do the second task card together, so we wandered all over the bookstore chatting and trying to find the sections we wanted to be in as we found a poem for each other, a place we each wanted to travel to someday, and a funny joke (or more than one) to share! We spent about two hours including driving time and had a fun time sharing, talking, and laughing. It definitely made me ready to take on another crazy week!

  • Babysitting: $10.00
  • Starbucks drinks and dessert- $9.00
  • Fun bookstore date – $0.

Total: $19.00. Not bad!!

What is your favorite fun date to do on Friday nights?

    1. Yeah it was a lot of fun and not really that cheesy at all! 😉 No, I didn’t. I even looked for it! But there was this other really weird “Goodnight Moon” book. It was about some famous person we had never heard of… lol.

  1. This is really sweet! But my husband ha-a-ates stuff like this 🙂 I would have to trick him and just say, “hey, let’s look at some recipes” or “what was your favorite book as a kid” and not tell him it was a ‘thing.’ HA!

  2. we did this one once! I LOVED It! 🙂 We just got a cookie at the starbucks in our bookstore and made it out for $2 😛 (my inlaws watch the baby so we don’t have to pay babysitting)

this is still one of my favorite dates!!! so fun! 😀

  3. I love this idea! I’m in a different place where I’m dating again after divorce, but that entails finding sitters for a total of 5 kids at two different homes, plus gas, because we live 30 minutes from each other… we could totally do this at a bookstore in between!

    I’m suggesting it!

  4. What fun! I love reading date ideas at The Dating Divas. They have really creative ideas. So happy that you and your husband were able to find an affordable & fun way to connect as a couple. Have a great week, Kathryn!

  5. I love the Dating Divas site! (I just need to follow through with some of their ideas). My husband and I love the Starbucks and Bookstore thing, though (it’s a personal favorite :).

    1. I totally know what you mean! I always save their ideas to use later, but forget or never follow through. This was the first one! 🙂

    1. Hey Crystal!
Thanks for commenting, I’m glad you like the idea. 🙂 My Facebook page says that you posted on it, but I can’t see it, feel free to send me a message!

  6. I like the bookstore-date. But… my daughter is a bookseller. To think, that people are occupying seats and places and do not buy anything is awkwart. At least one book would be the minimum. It is not a park which is payed by taxes (so: everyone). The shop belongs to someone who has to pay rent and stuff and pay salarys…
So one side: Yeah! great! On the other hand: completely unfair and egoistic… Nothing is for free. There is always someone paying…
